Our butcher block cutting boards and charcuterie boards are professionally made of high-quality, sustainable, food-safe hardwood, allowing them to be beautiful, able to last decades, and very easy to clean. Most of our wood is choice lumber from fallen trees here in Maryland. After being handcrafted, they are hand rubbed with two coats of Bangs Board Rejuvenator Oil to seal the wood, followed by an application of our Bangs Board Rejuvenator Wax, which is buffed in.
Our boards are handcrafted with care with choice hardwood lumber sourced from fallen trees right here in Maryland. With a hundred sticks in front of us, Cherry, Ash, Maple, and Walnut, we consider their grain patterns, color (sap vs. heart), and create combinations that people tell us are beautiful. That cannot happen in mass production.

Each board is made one at a time with stable, decay-resistant, and chemically free wood, milled, and clamped by us in our Maryland shop. Combining our hardwood selections with the highest quality of ingredients in our finishes allows us to create stunning boards that tell a story to the extent that your friends and family will notice and envy them.

Bangs Board Rejuvenator is a board care system, specially formulated to maintain your cutting boards, charcuterie boards, trivets, etc., for decades. Made from all natural food-safe ingredients, use regularly to ensure your boards are at peak performance. Bangs Board Rejuvenator Oil uses a blend of organic oils to enhance the natural beauty of wood by conditioning and moisturizing its fibers. A special, antimicrobial citrus oil adds a lively scent and extra protection. Bangs Board Rejuvenator Wax takes our oil a step further by adding the purest carnauba wax available to seal the oils in and provide that hard, beautiful shine and help protect the wood from cracking or warping.
Most board finishes use an inexpensive combination of mineral oil and beeswax. This combination not only fails to sink in, but washes off with hot water and soap, requiring you to have a cutting board for raw meat and another one for vegetables. After cutting all your raw meat with your Bangs Custom Board, simply clean the board with hot tap water and a mild soup, rinse well, then cut all your vegetables without any concern for contamination.
Bangs Board Rejuvenator Oil and Wax are both plant-based, vegan, Kosher, and food-safe, with natural properties to kill germs while keeping the board looking beautiful.
Juice Groove: As shown in the picture to the right, a juice groove can be added around the top perimeter of the board to capture the juice of your meat.
Finger Handles: We rout grooves in the sides to make it easy to pick the board up.
Stainless Steel Handles: We have handles that are 5" to 6" in length which are black, satin nickel, and oil bronzed. In addition, we have a 5" boat cleat, and 8" modern stainless and an 8" streamline boat cleat. Handles can be added to the sides of boards in the case of meat boards and on the surface for charcuterie boards.
Feet: We can add 3/4" black rubber feet to your boards.
Fish Clamp: We offer 9"x28" boards with a stainless fish clamp to allow you to use both hands to clean and prepare your fish.
The Bangs family has a rich heritage of woodworking. Edwin Bangs owned Bangs Custom Cabinets for many years before being called as a pastor in a church. After years of preaching, Edwin went back into woodwork for the last twenty years of his work life. John Bangs spent much of his youth hanging out with his dad in the shop. John's main job at age 6 was to sweep the floors, help with sanding, and put things away. At age 10, John was enrolled in an industrial arts class. His teacher unsuccessfully attempted to teach him and his classmates how to make bird houses. John ended up teaching his teacher how to use a dado set to rabbet the bird houses and thus fit properly together; John subsequently left in the middle of the year and transferred to a home economics class to learn how to cook. John’s grandfather was a machinist and made all his own jackplanes and squares necessary to make other tools and jigs - John still has one of these jackplanes and one of these squares! John’s great-great grandfather, Eli, was the cooper on the whaling ship, Helen Mar, out of Barnstable Harbor, Massachusetts. Eli, second in command to the ship’s captain, oversaw one of the most important jobs on the ship – making wooden barrels to hold whale oil for sale and water for the crew, and to store dry goods. The life and wealth of the crew depended on the quality of his barrels.
John spent most of his adult life in the sales world and owned a high-end audio/video company for 16 years. April 2023, John had a virus, and after a year and a half, was finally diagnosed with a rare auto-immune disease. With chronic fatigue, dizziness, brain fog, and insomnia, John was unable to work, had to close his company, and his family was without a sizable portion of their income.
Not being afraid of a challenge and needing to create income for his family, in the spring of 2024, John turned to his roots and realized that with his limited energy and health, could convert his A/V company building into a shop where he could make knives, cutting boards, charcuterie boards, etc.
Having no income for over a year, John did not have funds to buy tools and other needed items. After seeking the Lord’s guidance and asking a few friends to begin praying for him, one friend said he had some extra tools he could part with – a table saw, metal band saw, wood band saw, and jigsaw. Another person said he knew of a non-profit that was given woodworking tools and would be glad for someone to take them (80” belt sander, router table w/ router, dust collector, shaper, and a miter saw). Through research, John found a commercial butcher block countertop manufacturer who had many pallets of cut off maple, ash, cherry, and walnut and needed someone to pick them up – very inexpensively. Numerous friends and family pitched in to help John transform what had become a stuffed storage building into a fully working wood shop. It took from April to September of 2024 until the first cutting boards were made.
In addition, while the transformation of the shop was taking place, John had many days when his body simply wouldn’t let him work in the shop, so during those months, John did research. Knowing from his father that mineral oil-based cutting board finishes offered concerns, John started looking for a finishing solution.
Most companies marketing board oil and wax use mineral oil and beeswax and many offer it at a significant profit margin. The “board oil” that most companies sell is literally just mineral oil in a bottle marked up 400-800%. Other than overcharging, the problem lies in the fact that mineral oil never dries and simply washes off while leeching out of the wood. So, John created and tested a blend of all-natural, organic ingredients that are food-safe. In addition, they are vegan, non-GMO and Kosher, and mineral oil free as well have natural properties to kill germs, all while keeping your boards looking magnificent. The result is an oil and wax combination that truly seals the wood and protects it with a deep, hard shine and just happens to smell incredible! Since John doesn’t have stockholders demanding high profits, he is able to produce his much higher quality product at a very similar price offered by those selling mineral oil and beeswax.
Today, John, his lovely wife Ana, and their son Elijah work hard to create quality boards. Look at our boards and you will see that every one of them, while having similarities, is unique. Laying out a board, we put a hundred sticks in front of us – Cherry, Ash, Maple, and Walnut – look at their grain patterns, their color (sap vs. heart), and create combinations that people tell us are beautiful. That cannot happen in mass production.
Because we use stable, decay-resistant, and chemically free wood, which we mill ourselves, and combine this with the highest quality of ingredients in our finishes, you quickly understand why our customers love their boards. While some people only get one board, it is typical for a family to get multiple boards for their home. Let us help you pick your forever board.
